REVIEW
Here is the Invacare Comet (8mph) road/pavement scooter, Being an 8MPH scooter you do need to have a road tax disc on show (see below for more information). The Comet is a lovely scooter but it is starting to look a bit dated now so looking a bit more like a traditional scooter. The Comet comes with a full lighting system (front and rear lights, Break light, indicators and hazard lights) nice large wheels for a comfy ride pneumatic tyres which offer good absorption of any bumps in the road. Invacare supply the comet with all round adjustable suspension which offers a incredibly smooth ride, Delta shaped handle bars and an auto speed reduction switch when you turn the tiller which gives the comet great stability when cornering (this feature can be turned off by the press of a button). The range you can expect is from 25-30 miles per charge depending on the surface terrain you are using it on. It has a user weight of up to 25 stone (160kg), it has a well made captains seat which is very comfy for longer distances, The seat can rotate 360 degrees and the arm can be lifted up and down to aid getting on or off the scooter and you can also move the seat back and forward to gain extra leg room as well. It has a high level charging socket and an emergency handbrake should you need it.
The ride on this scooter is very good 1 of the best you are going to get in my opinion not bumpy and not to soft and all the controller of very well laid out on your tiller and display. There is also a button which makes you're 8Mph scooter into a 4MPH scooter as it is illegal touse 6MPH and 8MPH scooters on the public footpath's and areas, so a touch of this button will restrict you're speed and keep you on the right side of the law.
Charging
When charging your scooter you should be aiming to charge it for around 8-10 hours (overnight is a good time) always remember to charge the scooter after every time you use it. If you will not be using you're scooter for a period of time in winter for example we strongly recommend you charge you're scooter at least once a week to keep the battery's topped up, this can help prolong the life of you're batteries.
Servicing
Currently servicing is not required in the UK on Mobility Scooters however we always recommend that you try to get your scooter serviced once a year the same as you would do with a car, this can help make sure everything is running smoothly and possibly alert you if anything may need repair or replacement this can be done at most local Mobility Shops, should cost around £50.00-£75.00 and take just a few hours to complete.
Insurance
Insurance on mobility scooters is not required by law, however we feel it is worthwhile to insure any scooter for peace of mind. Not only can you cover yourself if you're scooter is lost stolen or damaged, but many policies come with Public Liability also should you be involved in an incident with a third party.
Many insurance companies also offer a Recovery/Breakdown service as well as Extended Warranties.
Road Tax
In Great Britain (and some other countries, always check you're local law's governing the use of Mobility Scooters) it is the law to apply and display the road tax disc on 6MPH and 8MPH scooters, when you buy a 6-8MPH scooter you will get a tax form which is a V55/4 and is your responsibility to fill out and send to the DVLA although most dealers will offer to do this for you. With second hand scooters you need to get a tax form from the DVLA which is a V55/5 which can be downloaded and printed or requested by telephone, this must be filled in and sent back with the last owners log book to get a new tax disc.
The tax and tax disc are both free in Great Britain(again you may need to check you're local law's), but you are required to apply for it and display it as the 6MPH and 8MPH scooters are considered road scooters.
